Governor Merritt C. Mechem papers, 1908-1925 (bulk, 1921-1922).

Summary: Collection consists of official papers of Governor Mechem. Correspondence discusses various subjects, some of which are the conveyance of federal public lands, the fence controversy at Tesuque Pueblo, the possible creation of a national park on the Mescalero Indian Reservation, and Japanese exclusion. Oaths contain Mechem's oath of office. Proclamations involve quarantines, and several types of weevils. Special reports and investigations involve the failure of the Santa Fe Bank, discrimination against Spanish-Americans at the Deming road camp, Ku Klux Klan activities, flood relief for Dona Ana County and the town of Lemitar, an alleged communist conspiracy at Clovis, the Gallup, New Mexico coal strike, the Pecos Water Users Association, the Rio Grande Survey Commission, and the Colorado River Interstate Compact Commission. Penal papers contain pardons, paroles, and commutations. Some pardons relate to Villistas involved in the raid on Columbus, New Mexico.

Merritt C. Mechem was born in Ottawa, Kansas (1870). He moved to New Mexico in 1903. He served as Territorial District Attorney (1905-1907), Justice of the Territorial Supreme Court (1911-1920), and as Governor of New Mexico (1921-1922).
